I just did a brief Q&A for RootBlog.

I participated in a radio show about Pandit Pran Nath and the American Kirana Lineage the other night. My teacher Michael Stirling performed a late night raga and invited some of his students who are composers to present pieces and talk a bit about their work and the influence of Pran Nath/Young/Riley etc. The show can be listened to here.

We have a show tomorrow night at Valentine's in PDX with Million Mists and The Woolen Men. Wet Hair were supposed to play but they had to cancel. Also Pete "DJ Swandive" Swanson is spinning funky booty bass, and it's his going away party so come see him off!

Also we have a new tape on NNA called Emergent Layer. I should have copies for sale here within the week, but you can also preview/order from NNA.

The space has beautiful stained glass windows and an extremely nice sound system, so I'm really looking forward to the show. I'm happy to be a part of the inaugural night of a new quarterly series at Holocene: New Musics. The idea is that local composers and musicians write for traditional music ensembles. Tomorrow night the ensemble is Classical Revolution PDX, and they'll be performing a new piece of mine I'm calling "No Condition is Permament" for string quartet, horn, and bass clarinet. There are several other exciting composers such as Daniel Menche, Tom Thorson, and Copy premiering new pieces, and the ensemble will also perform Philip Glass' String Quartet No 5.

Well, what's happened since we last spoke? Well, among other things, OPS did an installation and performance at the Tate Modern! Also, Golden Retriever played about 5 shows and was interviewed on Foxy Digitalis.

I made this cover version of a Michael Nyman song called Fish Beach:

I first heard it in The Cook, The Thief, His Wife, and Her Lover and was really obsessed with it, but it wasn't on the soundtrack. Eventually I found it on the soundtrack for Drowning by Numbers, but the song is only 2 minutes long and I found myself listening to it on repeat a lot and wishing it were much longer. So I went ahead and made my own extended version, using modular synth to arrange Nyman's original instrumental parts for synthesizer ala Wendy Carlos and adding more layers of my own overlapping rhythmelodic lines. I hope you like it.

Also, Golden Retriever is playing Holocene's 7th anniversary birthday party on Friday, June 4th. It's a stellar bill with us, Operative, Miracles Club, and Reporter. Doors at 8 and the show's free so get there early!

Tomorrow night Oregon Painting Society and Woolly Mammoth Comes to Dinner will unveil a new performance we're calling "Witch-Angel". It takes place inside "Hexxenhouse", our contribution to Disjecta's Portland2010 Biennial at the Templeton Building (5 SE 3rd). The performance will be at 9pm.

Also, O.P.S. has been invited to go to the Tate Modern in London! We're going to be participating in "No Soul For Sale: A festival of independents" to celebrate the Tate's 10th anniversary. To raise funds for this trip we'll be selling our boxes for $25 a piece after the performance tomorrow night.

It's an extra shitty spring right now in Portland, but there's a few shows happening to bring in New Life:

Ongoing for the month of April is "Hexxenhouse", Oregon Painting Society's contribution to the Portland 2010 Biennial. It can be viewed Friday through Sunday from 12-6pm at the Templeton Building 230 East Burnside (SE 3rd) until April 25th.

This Friday April 2nd I'm returning to Seattle to play a solo synth set with my favorite band Brother Raven for Gift Tapes' Synth Night. 9pm.

Then you Portland folks get a chance to catch the great Brother Raven on April 10th at the Wail with Golden Retriever, The Slaves, and Pete Swanson. Really excited for this bill.

Golden Retriver CDR, OPS - Shadowgut

You can finally order the debut Golden Retriever CDR on Root Strata! It's 43 minutes of blissed out polyphonic clouds made from analog synth and bass clarinet. It was recorded almost exactly a year ago, and listening back to it the other day I felt like the music fits this time of year very well. Samples can be heard at our myspace page. My roommate and fellow Oregon Painting Society collaborator Birch Cooper did the cover drawing. Root Strata only made 100 of these, and everyone else is sold out, get 'em while you can.

Actually, we're sold out of the CDRs now, sorry!

Speaking of OPS, here's a new Oregon Painting Society installation up for the month of February at PNCA's Manuel Izquierdo Gallery. We're all quite pleased with it and feel it's maybe our most concise statement to date. I did a four channel semi-aleatoric ambient sound installation that I'm really happy with, along with some other collaborative sound sculptures. It's a pleasure to collaborate with such talented, open, and dedicated artists.

PORT called the OPS show "one of the year's best" and published a lenghty photo-review yesterday. PSU will actually be closing for the holidays from the 18th to the 28th of December, so try to go check it out within the next week. My good friend Rachael suffered a horrible family tragedy: a car accident which took her mother's life and seriously injured her father and two brothers. This show will raise funds to help them with medical bills and other such things. YACHT, Au, Copy, and May Ling will perform; there is also an art auction organized by Sarah Meadows. OPS is currently making a big duck pinata for it stuffed with one-of-a-kind cassette tapes, mini-CDR's, comics, drawings, weird art objects, etc.

I stumbled upon a debate between these bloggers about the nature of Sonic Youth, which was interesting in itself but I really noticed this:

I think BMR (Bad Moon Rising) is the point where Sonic Youth in effect reconnect discord with the body, restoring to it a libidinal force which you hear in The Rites of Spring, but which the cold geometries of Schoenberg and Webern subsequently evacuated.

Why is it that dissonance is always only sensual if it is loud and aggressive? To my ears Webern's Symphony op. 21 or Six Bagatelles String Quartet are two of the most sensually evocative pieces of early 20th Century composition, and I can see no rational argument to separate from "the body" the experience of hearing Webern's sounds as opposed to any other sounds.

Or consider late Feldman: the music is quiet and dissonant with no metric rhythm; exactly the type that might be categorized as cold/intellectual/not connected with the body, etc. But if you actually listen to all 4 hours of For Philip Guston it's obvious that the piece is completely concerned with the body. It's about what happens to human perception when a piece of music lasts WAY beyond the scale we're accustomed to, and that is just as much about the body as it is the mind.

Frustrating how often criticism is premised on philosophically old-fashioned categorical dichotomies.

Friday: Golden Retriever debut/Approximate L opening @ Worksound

A few months ago, Jonathan Sielaff and I began getting together once a week to play music. He had been developing a setup for amplified and processed bass clarinet and I had been playing modular synth through multiple delays, both working in a kind of big-floating-modal-cloud sound world.

We're calling the project Golden Retriever and we're playing our first show tomorrow night at the opening of multimedia artist Bethany Ides' solo exhibition Approximate L.

The opening is at at Worksound Gallery (820 SE Alder) and starts at 7:30pm. Jonathan and I play at 9pm.

A funny thing about making year end best-of lists is that there's inevitably tons of great shit that comes out in a given year that you don't hear until after the year's over. Here's some really good records that came out in 2008 that I didn't hear until the last couple months:

Nico Muhly - Mothertounge
Muhly re-interprets the genre of the art-song to incorporate 21st Century production techniques. Farfisa, synth, rhythmic minimalism, a soprano singing numbers; up my alley for sure.

Maryanne Amacher - Sound Characters vol. 2
Finally another record of Amacher's painfully under-documented work. The hour long multi-part composition Teo! is a masterpiece of contemporary electronic composition. Amacher uses richly textured sounds and psycho-acoustic effects to work directly in the realm of perception.

Kemialliset Ystavat "s/t" - This is my new favorite song! It sounds like a parade of animals in a Miyazaki movie. Jan Anderzén fell in love with Brenna's art and sent us their two newest albums in the mail as a trade for letting him use her images on their website. A real win-win situation. The leaders of psychedelic Finnish folk seem to strive towards abolishing conceptual binaries: acoustic/electronic, traditional/progressive, improvised/composed, past/future.

Fennesz - Black Sea
While glitch electronica currently occupies a place in terms of cultural cache almost analogous to that of grunge during the late 90's, several of the movement's most talented practitioners continue to put out good records. Fennesz's solo albums have always tried to challenge the notion that experimental music is incapable of denoting sentiment, and "Black Sea" skillfully and naturally incorporates emotive tropes into a meticulous and compelling listening experience.

One thing to be aware of is that this was not originally conceived to be listened to straight through, but as something that you could just randomly tap into at any point. In the installation there was a foot pedal in front of the UFO that lit up the inside and played a random selection of this music.

Spielberg/Kubrick

This just reminded me that Spielberg ruined not one, but two Stanley Kubrick movies. There was AI, of course. I know, I know: Kubrick wanted Spielberg to direct it, but still I can't help but think of it as a brilliant Kubrickrian concept botched by the schmaltz-meister.

I forgot about Aryan Papers though, which was to be Kubrick's World War 2/holocaust movie. He had been working on it in pre-production stages for a while when Schindler's List came out, and he decided they were too similar and that he needed to start working on something else. Thanks a lot, Spielberg!

Speaking of Kubrick, this article argues that his much-faulted misanthropy is actually kind of a good thing for humanity. I haven't seen Wall-E so I can't speak to his criticism of it, but I kind of agree with the sentiment.

Matt Carlson - American Standard (2008)

Well, I finally got around to uploading my new solo CD for download. American Standard is an album I worked on (and off) for about 8 months, recording whenever I wasn't working or doing Parenthetical Girls stuff. The music was an attempt to bring together disparate musical interests of mine into a cohesive whole. "Vortex" is basically drone meets EAI with a pop melody on top. "Let's Move (into the store)" is Krautrock-pop using additive processes. The only real unifying aesthetic I guess is minimalist techniques put into song form, making use of an extended time scale. Really it's an EP with songs that are so long that it becomes a full-length.

The No.Fest is a 12 hour long out-music marathon spread across 4 separate venues. New music by Matt Carlson - Context

"Context" is a string trio (2 violins and cello) I wrote this spring, but I only recently received a recording of it. There's something strange about writing a piece of music and then waiting almost 6 months to hear it. It was performed in Seattle at Cornish College of the Arts in April.

The previous piece I'd done for string ensemble was a sort of rhythmic minimalist piece, which in some was I felt wasn't exactly idiomatic for strings. What is idiomatic for strings? Well, strings can hold notes for a long time, and are capable of playing different successive chords in perfect intonation. So that's the basic framework I set out to work in.

The main idea for the piece is that notes only have meaning when functioning in relationship to other notes. So chords are sounded, then notes drop out and the remaining notes that are left "hanging" sort of lose their meaning (or at least it changes). Then new notes are added which change the context for which those notes were heard, and thus their function, etc.

Also, I've always felt that dissonance is most effective when balanced with consonance so I tried to strike an appropriate balance of consonance and dissonance. Related to that, why is it a given that dissonance is a signifier of intensity or even anger and hostility? Why can't dissonance also be tranquil? So in this piece the dissonances are always played very delicately and quiet, while it is the consonant chords that are played loud and intensely.

Although the sound leaves something to be desired the videos are a very nice document. And they're promising better recorded, audio only versions soon. View the videos at the No West website.

No West improvised music festival this weekend

It's time for the 3rd annual No West festival of improvised music from the Northwest!

There are shows in Seattle on Saturday and Portland on Sunday, which feature some 36 experimental musicians and improvisers from Seattle, Portland, Olympia, Vancouver BC, the Bay Area, NYC, and Tokyo.

The Seattle show is at 7pm in the Chapel at the Good Shepard Center in Wallingford (4649 Sunnyside Ave. N just south of 50th St., one block east of Meridian)

PDX show is also at 7pm at the Portland Art Center (32 NW 5th Avenue & Couch)

New Music by Matt Carlson - The Thing, Itself

The Thing, Itself is the last of my recent series of new electronic music. It is actually the most electro-acoustic of the pieces, as it is made of up recordings of acoustic and electronic sound. The piece began as two different ideas which I ended up combining into one. The first idea was to make a piece that was entirely made up of the noise that is inherent to recording equipment, the sound that one normally tries to minimize when recording. The second idea was to make a piece that is entirely made up of the sounds of a microphone touching different objects. I liked the idea of hearing the music that the equipment makes, of letting the technology make the music. I was also interested in Morton Feldman's comment that he thought of his pieces as "priming the canvas" with sound. I ended up deciding to "prime the canvas" with the recording noise, which would be punctuated by the microphone sounds.

The piece deals with the balance of intention. Many elements are made up of unintentional sounds, such as the sounds that crept in from the field recordings, but these sounds are included intentionally. There is a theme of making a piece out of the things that I usually try to eliminate, embracing what normally bothers me about recording (about half of the field recordings are purposely recorded at low bit rates).

Paradoxically, all this "neutral" sound was mixed in a very active and elaborate manner. This set up another theoretical pair of action vs. restraint. While I recorded the microphone sounds I tried to use as much restraint as possible, but I used so many different sounds that the combination of them ended up being quite active (so much so that I actually cut a lot of the sounds out in the mix).

Anyway, let me know what you think. It may be my last electro-acoustic piece for a while as I'm currently pretty involved in other things.

This should be listened to relatively quietly.

The piece features many synthesizers playing the same figure, and several more synths generating melodic material based upon the overtones of that figure using resonant filters. The piece deals with repetition and perception, and should be played LOUDLY!!

New Electronic Music: Parabola

The second in my series of new electronic works: Parabola.

It is kind of half improvised, half composed in post-production. Some ideas I was thinking about while making it: stasis, many sounds heard as one sound, the continuum that exists between a pure tone and noise.

It's kind of similar to Evidence except the sound is pretty continuous, but there's a similar sort of juxtaposition between the beginning and the end of the piece. Also, the sound was made on synthesizer instead of on the computer and was much more improvisational.

Seems like I still play more shows in Seattle than I do in Portland. Anyway, got a couple coming up in the Emerald City.

Friday, March 2nd Bonus is playing with Ribbons (Jherek Bischoff's new project of guitar/ukulele songs w/string quartet. Really good!) at Artworks, which is downtown near Pioneer Square/Pike Place. I forget the address. Not sure about time/cost but I'd guess around 9pm and about $5.

Then Saturday night March 3rd, I'll be participating in a fund-raiser at Gallery 1412 (1412 18th Ave. on Union) to support Jason Anderson and Beth Graczyk's upcoming Japanese tour. The performances will consist of ad-hoc groupings of music and dance improvisers. The participants will include:
